Tarot - The Deck and the Spread
The tarot is a deck of cards that are used in psychic readings. It is one of the most popular tools for psychic readers. This set of cards was used before for games and entertainment, but, it was used later on for psychic purposes. Each card represents a character, and each character represents a meaning that can be related to the person’s life.
The Deck
Generally, there is no standard number of cards on the deck. The types of the cards and the suits on the deck are the same, but as for the number, it varies according to each psychic reader or user. The deck of the tarot card is subdivided into two divisions: the major arcana and the minor arcana. The minor arcana is contains the four major suits. Instead of having the hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades as the four suits, the four suits on this deck include the wands, swords, cups, and the circles or otherwise known as the pentacles. The suits on the deck have their own meaning and they are mainly focused on the different approaches of life. There are fourteen cards on each suit; the first ten are numbered as one to ten while the other four includes the page, the knight, the queen, and the king. Generally, the minor arcana of the tarot card represent the minor problems or issues in one’s life.
The major arcana, on the other hand, do not have something to do with the suits of the deck. They are independent cards and their main focuses are the ideals, the principles, and the concepts of a person. There are 22 cards that belong to this division, the first one numbered as one to twenty one, while the remaining card is numbered as zero or known as the “Fool” card. The major arcana of the tarot card represent the major events or issues of a person’s life.
The Spread
The spread, on tarot card reading, is the pattern of the card on which they are laid by the psychic reader after the shuffling of the card by the customer. Before the cards will be shuffled, the customer or the person receiving the reading should touch the cards first. It is a belief in the psychic world that the customer can transfer his or her energy to the cards if he or she touches it before the shuffle or before the spread. The customer should concentrate on his or her questions as well while touching the cards. That way, he or she will be able to get an accurate answer for his or her questions.
After the shuffling of the card by the customer, the psychic reader gets the card and lays it in a spread. Each position of the card on the spread has a significant meaning, according to the type of spread that had been use on the reading. The type of spread to be used on a certain tarot card reading depends on the question because some spreads are meant to be used for specific questions while others are meant to be used for emotional questions. The most popular spread is known as the Celtic cross.
